OK, tried the Asyla again... now... I have not been flying all day, just mowing with the DR all day (I don't have a bush hog because my tractor is broken)... so my tastes have changed a bit...

Besides all the other flavors noted, today there is definitely a honey (that would be heather honey) flavor up front immediately followed by anise.  Not licorice, but anise... I can usually tell the difference... licorice is sweeter up front, on its own.. anise is sharper.

This is my number 1.  Asyla ROCKS... I can hardly wait to try Hedonism....  I've always been a bit hedonistic...

My wife and I were discussing the "flavors of peat, vs others"... Peaty Scotch she calls "dirt flavored".  I told her there were times that I preferred other Scotches, but I had never disliked the peaty Scotch... She said, "yeah, I can understand that... days where you want to go dig and plant a garden, maybe dig a pond... you can warm up with a "dirt flavored Scotch"".
I didn't know whether to say "YEAH" or "you just don't understand"... so I just looked at her.  She laughed at me...

So I'm having another Scotch...

Dan, this is the first time I have ever wanted to try a Scotch.

I do find it hard to believe that you are a bit hedonistic. Your just too extreme to be a bit of anything.

I'll have to try that Scotch.
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

I'll have to try that Scotch.

A couple weeks ago, after work, a couple of my co-workers and I were discussing our adult beverage of choice. One guy really liked Maker's Mark on ice, the other said he was a Jameson man.

When I told them I like good whisk(e)y of all types, but my favorite whisky is a good single malt Scotch, one replied "man, I hate Scotch. I've tried it several times, and to me it tastes like dirty pennies." The other guy chimed in "I like Irish whiskey, but I never cared much for Scotch either."

I explained to them that "Scotch" was a very broad category of spirit that covers an enormous range of styles and flavor profiles, and the only thing that all Scotch has in common with each other is that it's whisky made in Scotland. Other than that, one can be radically different tasting than another, and "most likely," I explained to them "you just didn't like the ones you tried. If you like other whiskies, I bet I could introduce you to some single malts that you'd like."

The Maker's Mark guy replied "no way, man. People have told me that before, and I've given it a fair chance. I just don't like it." I asked him which ones he tried, and he replied "I don't remember all of them, but I do remember I tried Johnny Walker Red, Glenfiddich, Dewar's, J&B, and a couple others I don't remember." So basically, mostly cheap blends. Just as I thought.

I asked them "if I brought a variety of different single malts, would they set aside past experiences and try them with an open mind?" Both replied (with much skepticism): "sure." So we planned an afternoon after work, and I brought the following:

Glenmorangie Original 10
Cardhu 12
GlenDronach 12
Macallan 12
Dalwhinnie 15
Dalmore Cigar Malt
Tamdhu Batch Strength

I didn't bring any peated Scotch for this session, based on their description that they found Scotch to be earthy-tasting.

For comparison, I also brought along:
Redbreast 15 (for the Jameson guy)
and
Michter's Small Batch (for the Maker's Mark guy)

I had them drink water between samples, and we washed out the glass between each. Both sampled all whiskies neat.

First I started them out with Bourbon and Irish to gauge how much they'd like whiskies closest to their chosen favorites.

Jameson Guy really loved Redbreast 15, and said he thought it was much better than Jameson. He said he may never go back to Jameson again after trying Redbreast.

Maker's Mark Guy really liked the Michter's a lot and said he thought he might prefer it over Maker's, but would need to drink both side by side to say for sure.

Jameson Guy also really liked Michter's, and Maker's Mark Guy LOVED Redbreast 15.

So, now that I'd established they did like some whiskies...on to the single malt Scotches.

Both were VERY surprised to discover that they really liked at least 3 of the single malts, and thought all but 2 of them were at least "pretty good."

Both didn't care for Dalwhinnie 15 or Macallan 12, which surprised me. They said they would happily buy any of the rest. I asked each to line up the bottles in order of preference from most to least favorite. Counting the Irish and the Bourbon, each one ranked all the whiskies in the following order, from most to least favorite:

Maker's Mark Guy:
1. Michter's Small Batch - preferred it to Maker's Mark
2. Dalmore Cigar Malt - really liked it, and said he liked it almost as much as the Bourbon
3. Redbreast 15
4. GlenDronach 12
5. Tamdhu Batch Strength
6. Cardhu 12
7. Glenmorangie Original 10
8. Macallan 12
9. Dalwhinnie 15

Jameson Guy:
1. GlenDronach 12 -- he thought this was the best whisky he'd ever tried, and even preferred it to the Redbreast. He was VERY surprised by this, and said he didn't realize Scotch could be so good. He said he was planning to buy some on his way home. He was literally blown away with this one, and couldn't believe he actually liked a Scotch so much.
2. Redbreast 15 - preferred it to Jameson
3. Cardhu 12
4. Dalmore Cigar Malt
5. Tamdhu Batch Strength
6. Michter's
7. Glenmorangie Original 10
8. Macallan 12
9. Dalwhinnie 15

What this exercise showed me is that both guys liked the sherry cask matured Highland and Speyside single malts better than the bourbon cask matured ones, which surprised me a little. I would have thought that someone who liked Bourbon a lot would recognize and appreciate the familiar vanilla and butterscotch notes you get in Bourbon. Macallan 12 was the surprising exception here, though. Both really liked all whiskies tried except for Macallan and Dalwhinnie. I think that's because the bitter "oaky" notes from the cask aging was a bit more noticeable in those two.

Afterward, both told me "well, you were right; I guess I do like some Scotch after all. Thank you for that tasting session. This really surprised me!" Both guys who had made up their minds that they "hated Scotch" discovered that there's a lot more variety in "Scotch" flavors than they thought.

Just thought someone who likes Bourbon but has never warmed up to Scotch might find this little experiment interesting.

Great story Ted!

Love the Redbreast 12 but I’ve never tried the 15, now you’ve sparked my interest. Maybe this weekend for the World Cup final.
