Does anyone have a favorite load for their .300 win mag in 165gr? I'm trying to get a load developed, my gun (rem. 700) seems to be very forgiving. I'm shooting nosler accubonds. If you have a favorite for 180 gr. accubond or some other ballistic tip, that would be helpful as well. Thanks in advance.

i havent had any luck with 165gr bullets in either of the 300's i have owned, the 180's have always shot better. for a 300 win mag i shot 180gr bt's with a charge of 71 gr of imr 4831 and used cci magum primers

That is probably because most 300 have a 10" twist rate and the surface area of the 165 grain bullets is to small for that twist rate. I never understand why people want to shoot those short little bullets anyways when the heavier ones are better in every regard. |

me too, i only gave them a whirl cause i like to tinker, thinking they would be a better choice for deer hunting, after the first couple of test groups i shot in the 165's sucked, i decided to hell with them and stuck with the 180's |

I'm seriously considering the 180s...got them and the 165s on my bench. I prefer a 180, but was advised by a friend to get the 165s. Ya'll have me leaning back to the 180.

The 165 offers absolutely no advantage in the 300 or really any 30 cal in my book that has the power to push them and a fast enough twist rate. Heavier bullets because they are longer they will have a higher BC which means they will fly better and the wind will affect them less. Because they are heavier they will hit harder and penetrate deaper. A 165 will shoot faster coming our of the barrel, but the 180 will retain more speed and longer distances.

I have loaded mainly 190 gr Sierra Matckkings in my 300 WM. I did load some molly coated 168 gr AMAX bullets but that was mainly to put a little molly in the barrel when new. In the 300 WSM I only use 180. In 30-06 I have used 168 SMK, 168 AMAX molly but mostly the 180 grain bullets mainly Nosler Partitions. In .308 I usually use the 168 AMAX but Im thinking about going to the 175 SMK. I think the twist in the 300 WM is better with the heavy bullets and I really like the 190 SMK running 2900 Fps.

For whatever reason I can't explain, the 180's always shoot better for me in my 300 WM. I tend to try to push them hard, so that could be the reason I never really came up with a load for the 165's that gave me the velocity I wanted and accuracy combined. I have found lots of powder that would give me the velocity I wanted, but, in the end for accuracy and velocity, IMR 4350 gave me the best results. 70 grs. of 4350 gave me the best accuracy and 72 grs was max. for accuracy and velocity with 180 gr. Ballistic Tips. I can get real close to 3100 fps with the 180 gr./ 72 grs IMR 4350 combo out of my 26 inch tube. That's real velocity over a chronograph. Nothing ever lived after taking a hit from that combo either.
PS- If you are using Remington cases, that 72 gr. load I listed might be a bit on the spicy side. I like Lapua cases and will use Winchester when Laupa is not an option. Edited by Roy Finn - September/29/2008 at 17:33 |

I've had great success with 190gr SMK. Fed. brass, 66.5gr of IMR 4350, and Win. Lg rifle magnum primers. 3040fps in Remington Sendero with .60-.90 inch groups, and that's with the lawyer proof trigger.

Ok, I went to the range with my 165s and my 180s...now I'm switching to 180s. Anyone have a favorite load?? I had pretty good luck with various loads of IMR 4831...but I'm open to suggestions.
