Hello all,

This is my first post here… trying to get some verification on my choices for my first precision rifle build.
I’m starting with a Remington SPS Tactical in .223, going with the SWFA SS 10 x 42 MOA scope.  This rifle will be a bench rest shooter and my home range only goes out to 200 yards though I do frequent others that go out to 400-500.  I already reload for AR’s so already load heavier 69 SMK’s and want to develop my current load for maximum accuracy.
After reading, based on budget and favorable reviews of the features, I have decided on going with a TPS XP Tactical Base and TPS TSR Scope Rings set. Specifically the 0 MOA base and low rings.
Does anyone foresee any issues with my choices, given my platform? High enough for scope clearance with caps? Are there any pros and cons on going with the obviously lighter weight aluminum base and rings as opposed to the steel?

Appreciate all your insights thanks in advance.

P.S. BTW, stupid thing to ask but can anyone tell me if the SWFA SS 10 x 42 MOA scope comes with bikini covers? I really don't see the need for Butler Creeks being this is just going to be a range gun, rather spend the extra cash on reloading components.

I have an SPS Tactical in 308, with a 20moa rail (which puts the objective closer to the barrel) i can get by with super lows,  you won't have any ring issues.   As far as the bikini covers, I don't think they do.  I'd just spend the extra few dollars on the butler creeks.

Would you say my current choices are decent ones? Should I just get the 20 MOA? Aluminum or steel?

TPS makes good stuff.  Superlows is what I would go with as well.

You don't need the 20 MOA for the distances you are shooting and the caliber you have.  The SS scopes have a ton of elevation adjustment built in.

Only suggestion I'll make is go with the SWFA 16x, the extra bit of mag will help for just target shooting. and its not way to much that you'll see your heartbeat in the scope.

Charge hard. TPS makes good stuff. I've had 2 or 3 sets of their rings and they are all perfect.

I thought about this and remembered my AR's share a Vortex Viper 1-4 PST, with TMCQ MOA RETICLE staying consistent will probably be to my benefit.

I looked at a few videos online and think that I may just stick with the 10X... I do 6 inch steel at 200 pretty consistently at 4X with my Viper PST. I think the 10X may be more versitle for me in regards to FOV at targets inside 200 which as I stated would be my max 90 percent of the time.

Super low steel, but they may not be in stock at this time. TPS as good as they are quality wise, run behind at times with production.

Got an email stating the TPS super lows are out of stock, the manufacturers website says the same.

I have to call SWFA on Monday to see what the status is. I'm wondering what to order as a replacement if the estimated ship time can't meet my 2-3 weeks deadline.

I was thinking a EGW combo perhaps> Maybe just ordering a set of SS rings to tide me over and using them on another scope for my M&P 15-.22lr later after the TPS's arrive.

I would recommend a set of steel rings like Seekins, Badger, or the like. I've had some bad juju using aluminum rings over the years.
I know they are more expensive than the SS or the TPS, but these are great rings and will last you a life time. Buy once, cry once.

These rings made by a member here look fantastic. I've never seen them, but the design makes good sense.

I too have a S Tac in .223, with aftermarket stock. Good rifle and a potential good shooter.

Seekings low rings and their base was my next choice... though I was trying to balance budget and quality in going with the TPS combo.

That being said.... I know they are not sold by SWFA but any input regarding Larue QD rings and their base for the Remington 700? I have Larue gear on my AR's they are top notch but really don't hear much about their bolt action stuff... a QD set of rings for the SS scope sound really appealing for switching over to one of my AR's once in a while, without having to un-mount it off the rings.

Seekins are aluminum.

I stand corrected.
Meant "quality" rings, over lesser quality, aluminum units like SS.

Hope I'm not thread-jacking, but I had the same question as Boxerglocker.

Mine's a 308, but otherwise the same... SS10x on an SPS Tac.  I've been eying the TPS rings since they seem to well liked, and are certainly well priced.

Why steel rings instead of aluminum?  Should the base be steel as well?

You can mix and match steel with aluminum.  The key is to ge quality rings.  aluminum tps is not he same a aluminum tasco if you know what I mean.  The super lows will work with the 308 as well, same barrel contour, same action.  never had any issues with mine. This is with the SS low rings and a 20 MOA rail, you can see I have plenty of daylight for BC caps as well, TPS super lows will still give you room for them as well though.

Seekins, TPS, LaRue, Aadland, Bobro, all are aluminum and are all very good quality, actually some of the best.
