Mike, what did you wind up doing? Your idea about putting a Barlein barrel on a Savage action is a good one. Not hard at all to get a rig like that shooting 1/2 inch or better. I have a 308 and a 6.5 Lapua with Bartlein barrels on standard off the shelf actions that shoot 1/2 inch or better. The 6.5 has a, 8.5 to 7 gain twist barrel.  You could talk to Savage and see if they would send you a factory blueprinted action or could buy a 10 BA Stealth rifle that already has a blueprinted action, a chassis stock, AICS magazine and Accutrigger for less than a custom action only and see how it shoots for about $1200. Adding a Bartlein barrel can only make things better and takes 15 minutes to put on and head space.  Custom actions do hold their value better though, but the cost of what I have outlined with the Bartlein barrel is about $1800. A defiance action starts at about $1500, then the stock is about $800-1000 with bottom metal, magazine $60-85, barrel $600, and trigger $100-200. Bartlein could mount and headspace the barrel on the custom action for you for a gunsmith charge or you could get your action supplier to do that. One thing about many custom actions is that the recoil lug is integral to the action itself.

It's all a matter of what you budget will accommodate.

Ended up going the custom route.  I picked up a Big Horn Arms TL3 action and a Mark Chanlynn barrel in 6.5 Creed.  Mark, from Rocky Mountain Rifle Works, is actually building the rifle with other components I purchased (Manners T3 stock with their mini-chassis and Jewell trigger).

Should be picking it up sometime next month.  March 3-24X scope in Seekins rings and an Atlas PSR bipod will round out the build.

Definitely a splurge.  The gun safe has a few more slots open to help fund it, but it has been fun and looking forward to getting the rifle to the range.

Will I do it again?  Possibly but just as likely to rebarrel a Savage or Remington action like a recent Remington Model 7 in 260 Remington.

Always been a fan of the 22 centerfire caliber and recently picked up a Remington 700 in 220 Swift to go along with my 22-250 and 223 Rem.  One in 222 Remington might be next in line.

It is all about the chase for me.
