I am trying to choose a scope to match the long range potential of a 6.5 Ruger LRPR and have some ranging capability. My candidates are the SS 5-20X50 HD, the Leupold 6.5-20X50 VX-3i Varmint or a Vortex PST EBR-1, possibly an HST. Which would be the choice for clarity and image sharpness at long distances? Do these track reliably? With about a $1300 cap is there something that stands out as head and shoulders above these? I can’t lay hands on all these myself so any knowledgeable input would be appreciated. Thanx.

Of the ones on your list the SWFA SS 5-20 is the way to go, IMO.

SS5-20, no question.
Have you shot long range? What are you calling "long range"? |

Ditto everyone else, 5-20 SS. Mine sits on my 308 but routinely shot 600, 800, 900, and 1K yards with it. Mechanicals are rock solid and repeatable.

Craig, I work for SWFA. The guys above do not, so obviously there is no bias.
An issue that you may encounter with the VX-3i and the Viper is running out of internal adjustment. Leupold will have 116 MOA with a 30mm tube and the Viper will have 65 MOA. Where the SS will have a minimum of 30 MRAD. Which is more than enough travel to carry the 6.5 CM out to long ranges (800 yards or farther) Granted all three choices are very good. Although only one is truly a tactical scope. On that rifle I would concur with everyone above that the SS would be to go to decision for what you would like to do. |

I would also pick the SS 5-20x. I have several Vortex optics a couple from the different Viper families, great optics for sure but they are no SS HD in the glass dept. I also have several Leupold optics vx3, fx2, vxr and vx6. Optically the SS is better than any viper, by a noticeable amount IMO. Vs a VX3, I would say the SS is better also. Vs a VX6, that would be tougher to decide.
The 5-20x SS HD on your rifle should be capable of giving you enough adjustment to reach 1500 yards +. So with that scope it will provide you with every thing you need to take you to the limits of the 6.5. Great glass, rock solid adjustments, and tons of adjustment for going way out there. |

Thanks for your responses. I was leaning that way myself. In fact I have owned the rifle for a couple of months waiting for the Black Friday sales to scope it. I have the SS 3-9X, 10X and 3-15X, all excellent scopes and I like the idea of staying with a familiar reticle. I also own a Viper but nothing from Leupold. I primarily am a hunter and recreational shoot at a range with targets out to 200 yds and gongs @300. I have never had a need to take a hunting shot at over 365 paces. This is why I asked my question based on the rifle not my long range skills. I have purchased some land North of Arizona’s Mogollon Rim in antelope country where I can shoot at 1000 yds and beyond. I am looking forward to trying my hand at longer ranges. Thanks again.

If you want to buy right now, I would go with the Viper. If you can wait til SWFA black friday sales, wait until then. They always run good deals on their scopes.

Also with whatever scope you choose, think about getting a +10/20 MOA base for it too.....

Hard to beat that idea, especially when you are so close to each other. |
