I am in the market for a new scope.  Both of these scopes are on sale at SWFA for $599, both marked down from $799.  Which is the better scope?

I own a vx5hd 2-10x.  But mine is the illuminated version, but other than that they should be the same.  If you shoot varying distances and want to dial, the Leupold with the zero lock 2 turret works awesome for that.  I have data out to 1200 yards with mine on my 6.5 creed and have been everywhere in between many times and it works well for me.

Some who have seen both claim the Vortex optics may be slightly better.  But the optics in the VX5 are very good.  I can hunt and see game well past legal shooting times.

With the Leupold you can buy the nice alumina flip caps, they are fantastic. The are durable and will fold right up to the scope out of the way.  They seal up nice and you don't have to worry about them breaking the 3rd or 4th time you use them.

So it depends upon your uses.  If it is a set it and forget it scope the Vortex may be a the one.  But if you want to dial and have nicer scope caps the Leupold wins.

Personally, I would pick the Leupold if I it were me picking, just because those are great features to have.
