I'm looking at this scope for hunting and defense and plinking applications.

How is the low light performance?  Would I get better low light performance from Vortex's superior glass and coatings, or something like a leupold vx-r 2-7x33 much larger objective lense?

I value beautiful glass, field of view, quick acquisition, and low light performance.

Budget to 1200.  I see demo versions of the Razor at that price.

Thanks in advance!

I always think glass trumps larger objective lenses/magnification, although the 33mm objective is hardly considered "unwieldy".

As much as I like the VX-R line, I have a 3-9x Firedot Duplex, with a $1200 budget, I'd look elsewhere.
Can't comment on Vortex Razor HD, because I've never seen one.
Conversely, if you had a $500 budget, then I would heartily recommend the VX-R. Maybe your comparison of the VX-R to the Razor was merely for illustration purposes?
If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

I'm willing to pay a premium if I can get elite lowlight performance on a 1-6.  If I can't do that,  I'd rather spend less and give up on the 1 power low end, and just get a higher power optic with a bigger objective if it's going to give me similar low light performance.

Can I buy premium lowlight performance in a 1-6?  Or is that strictly the purview of larger objective, higher magnification scopes?
