I got one in the other day and will be running on a Nosler 280AI
Illuminated LR Firedot duplex
same illumination system as the VX-R but with 11 vs 9 settings
Initial impressions are good
At 2x there is a nice wide field of view and an overall "big" feel to the image
very forgiving eyebox, easy to get on target
the reticle gets very bright (center dot, .3 MOA)
Testing against a Victory FL 4-16x50, well, yes, the Zeiss is better
Testing against an Accupoint 3-9x40, the VX-6 is better, brighter, sharper, better resolution
Testing about 45 minutes before sundown until dark
Reticle can be set VERY low, zero flair and very similiar to the Accupoint (I have the Mildot / green dot)
The ballistic dots (two below scope) actually work very well witht the 280AI running a 140g @ 3150 and a 300 yard zero
Even though I am in general not a fan of calibrated reticles..
I can see where this would work fine for most of my hunting which puts me a dead hold out to 350 and the little dot would serve well for low light out to 350.
Good lighting, the dots would work at 4 and 500
A little range time to play with but it should be a good hunting setup as 95% my shots are under 400 and most under 300, but I like the option to confidently go to 500
Into low light the scope works very well at 12x though you may need to back off a tad on magnification when it gets VERY low light like after 30 minutes past sundown
In short, I think they got this scope pretty well dialed in for a hunting scope
Fairly lightweight and trim
Reticle choices are personal preference of course and there are other options but this is all Leupold had available and I think it may actualy work fine with this gun
The CDS turret with a zero stop will be ordered in the next few days to try out, they are free, so, why not?
I will probably run this through the upcoming deer season after some long distance range time and testing..

I've got a dial on my VX6 duplex model. It works very well. Great glass.

When adjusting the CDS dial, after rotating the dial all the way up then back down, does the reticle return to zero?

The last time I shot with little wind, we could hit targets out to 900 yards, back to 100 yards and in between ranges of 300, 390, 500, 625,and 750. It worked perfectly.

Did you happen to try it out under the full moon? Was thinking about a VX-R for my next hog hunting rifle and am wondering if the illumination will turn down low enough to be just barely visible without obscuring the target. As a comparison, my Trijicon works very well.

yes, it gets every bit as dim and fine as the Accupoint
I treid the VX-Rs last year when they came out, the VX-6 uses the same illumination system
It works as well as my S&B Flashdot...
they NAILED the illumination
Bill Wilson has been an advocate of the Accupoints and likes the VX-Rs a lot and has posted here saying as much. From a guy that spends at least 1/2 the year in the woods hunting hogs that says a lot

For those that have a VX 6, I just mounted up my two VX6s (2-12x42) and wondered if it was normal to see the barrel of each respective gun at 2 power? One is mounted on a cva apex with high deadnutz rings and the other is mounted on an a bolt with Leupold medium rings. Is this just an issue with having it set on 2 power? I don't see it when I turn it to 3 power.
I'm looking forward to getting the CDS dials setup before next hunting season. |
