New member, building up a ruger 10/22 for semi-serious target competition at my gun club.  All the volquartsen goodies, .92 barrel, etc.  Indoor range is 50ft (so about 17 yds), outdoor will be shooting at 50, 75 and 100 yds.

So heres my requirements (feel free to call me out if any of them seem misguided):

I know everyone says get a fixed 4 power, but the variable power will help me in the different ranges, so I've pretty much made up my mind to get something around 3 or 4 on the low end to 10 or 12 on the high.

A/O is a must.  Preferably down to at least 10 yds, 15 absolute minimum.

1" tube is a must.

At least 32, 40 preferred

Quality eye relief isnt a huge deal but appreciated.

No real hard desire for one reticle over another, but mil dot or something similar is cool by me.

Price: Plenty of people in the posts I have read so far either want a scope thats less than gun, or one that costs several times more.  I want something in the middle.  150$ or under is optimal.  200$ is really my ceiling but if I'm wasting money on a scope that will go south in a year by spending less let me know.

So from searching through this forum and spending entirely too much time at the gun shop talking to people, I've found a few choices. Wanted to get some thumbs up or down, or even other suggestions:

BSA Sweet 17 3-12x40 a/o incredible deal at 89.95$ http://www.riflescopes.com/products/17312X40/bsa_3-12x40_swe et_17_riflescope.htm

Simmons 22 Mag 3-9x32 a/o super cheap at 59.95$ http://www.riflescopes.com/products/NEW511072/simmons_3-9x32 _22_mag_rifle_scope.htm

Bushnell Trophy Air Gun 4-12x40 a/o top end of my price range at 184.95$ (is it ok to use an air gun scope on a rimfire????) http://www.riflescopes.com/products/734124/bushnell_4-12x40_ trophy_air_gun_scope.htm

Weaver classic rimfire 3-9x32 a/o really more than I'm willing to spend at 211.95$ http://www.riflescopes.com/products/849398/weaver_3-9x32_cla ssic_rimfire_rifle_scope.htm

I'd love the burris or leupolds but they're really too expensive for me.

Did I miss anything, are BSA and Simmons really so crappy as people say - that sweet 17 is mighty cheap?

Yes its my first post, yes I searched the forum, yes I'm a newbie - be nice

Thank you in advance

Hello Browntown.

You have done some research and as you have found and will find that bsa and tasco make some low price scopes and that is what you will get.I myself had gave the simmions 22 mag 4x32 a try because of the coating and claims they have made and found it to be real crappy.Stick with burris and leupold as the make lots of mid priced scopes as well as high end scopes that one cant go wrong with.I pick up a burris 3x9 and a 4x14 fullfield 2s not so long ago and love them.It is going to best now and in the long run for you to spend a bit more now and get something thats going to fill your needs and by the sounds of it you have allready spent some good bucks on the set up.

Good luck.

Hoss, thanks for your post. I was skeptical about bsa and simmons, and have been reaffirmed.  I was hoping the bushnell or weaver would be adequate though since the burris and leopold's are mighty pricey (ive dumped a decent amount of cash in this target gun, but one bonus at a time -- 300$ for a scope will hurt a lil). I dont want to waste money on crap though. If it comes down to spending more upfront for something that will serve me well in the long term I can be convinced.  My gripe with the burris ff2 is that the a/o is 50 yds to infinity. I'd really need something that can go down to 10 or 15 yds if I could. Can't really find an a/o scope in the leupold lineup, im sure they're there just cant find em. So if BSA and Simmons are as crappy as their prices are low, i'm really hoping someone will tell me the bushnell air rifle scope will work on a rimfire and is good, or the weaver is worth the money even though its a 32mm.

scope on this web site for 99.95 on closeout.I called SWFA  and asked them

how the scope would preform.Just like you I didnt want to throw money away.

The whitetail classic has camera lens glass in it .and the 50 mil obj. gathers alot

of light.I Have many High End Scopes Zeiss S&B EOTIC and this scope is not anywhere in the same class its still a GOOD scope and I love it for its purpose.

The Bushnell Trophy would be a good choice for your Ruger 10/22. Yes it is okay to use an air-rifle rated scope on a .22 rimfire rifle.
