Where are the lenses of the more expensive riflescopes made? I know that S&B's lenses are made in Hungary, but how about Zeiss, Swarovski and Nikon's top models?
Thank you. |

Companies do not generally disclose this and I am not sure why it matters anyway.
Be that as it may, to the best of my knowledge, Swarovski makes all of their stuff in Austria. With Zeiss it varies depending on the model with some sourced from Germany while others come from Japan and China. All of the current Nikon scopes are made in the Phillipines, although I am not sure why you lumped Nikon together with Swarovski and and Zeiss. ILya

Schott has factories across the globe if I'm not mistaken, including China. Where the scope is assembled doesn't necessarily mean the glass came from the same place.

yes most glass if from China. Leupold is the only scope manufacturer who hasn't been afraid to be honest open and has talked about this lately. Nightforce gets theirs from Japan. I think S&B uses German.
But even most of the European makers use Chinese glass. There is no reason not to. Glass technology is not like it once was. I have read when Leupold gets a shipment of glass they go through it looking for the glass that will meet the standards they have for gold ring scopes, then they obviously have lesser standards for cheaper scopes. I guess everyone does. But it also explains why we find such good glass in some very affordable scopes like SWFA, and Burris and Bushnell, and almost every scope you can name. It seems like the glass is really good in most. Then there are some expensive coatings for some of the upper tier scopes. I think the quality of Burris XTRii scopes is unreal this year. Same goes for the SWFA scopes.....and many others. WE are pretty lucky there are some great scopes that are really affordable these days. :))) |
