I hunt because thousands of years ago my ancestors packed mud on their bodies to mask their scent and slung spears at wild animals in hopes of survival.  I do believe that just as in the animal kingdom certain information is passed from generation to generation that humans also have innate urges and tendencies that had their roots in their primeval ancestors.  I have absolutely no desire to stand on the side of the road next to my truck with shotgun in hand and listen for deer hounds to chase a whitetail by me as is customarily done here in Virginia.  I spend hours scouting the habits of my prey and give myself every advantage possible in scent inhibition and masking.  I know my prey well and hunt as if my very survival were at stake.  I test the limits of my scenses including my intuition.   I never had a father that took me hunting as a kid and was first exposed to the sport in my mid twenties.  However once I got a taste my ancestors called to me.   Now forever more my wife and I will quarrel from Oct through the the first week in January because I will be completely preoccupied during that period.

Same as me Doug, you've got the"UG"gene!  I had no hunting influence what so ever. It's been ALONG time ago but I believe I started out at maybe 5 or 6yrs old sharpening a sapling and gigging frogs.

CoolExcellentExcellentExcellentCool  I am with you Doug!  Luckily I was surrounded by tropical forest in Northern Florida growing up.  Thats were I taught myself my woodcraft and started sharpening my hunting skills with a BB gun at an early age.  I love to explore, build leantos and set traps.  Running Dogs is not true Hunting, it is more like fishing in a hatchery holding pond.  When I am hunting, I am all business.  No Partying until after the hunt is over.  And I mean completely over, not just when I get back to camp at the end of each day.  Celibrating a successful hunt with my hunting companions is fantastic and the shared Camaraderie is something I will always remember!!! But after the Hunt!

My grandfather on my mother's side had an Apache chief in his lineage (which I guess gives me some small amount of Indian blood).  He was a pasture rider for a pipeline for many years (rode a horse miles and miles a day).  When I was very young, he taught me all I knew about hunting.  He helped me make a bow. He taught me concealment using dirt/mud, trees, bushes as means to become a part of the environment, to creep through the woods like an animal, to respect and love all creatures.  To honor them. (Until I started using "modern" scents and cover scents, my wife thought I was weird... used to roll in mud, stick branches to my clothes, etc.  Now you can get all that out of a bottle or a purchased costume).  I hunt because I don't think I could live without it, because it is a part of me, of humanity.  There is a calling within me which must be satisified.  Joy and sadness are a mixture in every successful hunt.  Joy, because even though there is a grocery store down the road, I have provided for my family (or eliminated a threat to my pets, a farmers livestock, etc), sadness because a beautiful creature gave up its life for my and my family's food.  I do not hunt the wolf, wolves are sacred, the bear is my brother and I will only kill him to save myself or another.  The "little dogs", the coyote have crossed "the barrier" and no longer keep to their range.  They kill pets, livestock, etc indiscriminately.  I do kill them, but am sad at the killing.  I really don't kill much in the way of "pests" unless I cannot scare them away.  I've killed several foxes, but have vowed to only take them if I find them or their sign in my "yard".  I don't much care for "stand" hunting, but do it (more this year than any other).  I prefer to walk through the woods, hiding in natural covers, when I can.  The woods are getting so "small" it is difficult to do that anymore.  I hunt because I love nature, natural order, and the satisfaction of bringing my own food to table, and the satisfaction of the "primal instinct".  I love it.
I generally hunt alone.  There is no "comeraderie" for me in hunting.  It is a personal thing.  The fellowship comes after, in the telling of the tales of the hunt.  That is when friends and companions get together to "brag of their prowess" or tell the tales of the ingenuity of the game and how clever it was to get away from the best laid plan, how magically the creature escaped.

BP, I allways see the lighter side of life!

I have hunted for many reasons during my hunting career. As a young kid it was for the romantic side of hunting. I was the great white hunter in Africa, shooting birds, mice and anything that stood still long enough. I was at one with the bush.
In my early twenties I hunted partially for the enjoyment of being with nature, but mostly for the meat. Biltong (or jerky) to be precise. That was what I enjoyed, a beer a good TV show, biltong and a sharp knife.
Then came the good years, I had my fill of venison and biltong (also spiced dry sausage) and moved on to greater things. Trophy hunting was the thing. Along with this came the feeling of conservation (why else would you pay 5x the going rate to shoot an animal), all the camp talk, dinner party talk and a host of other enjoyable waffling about hunting and the greater meaning of life.
This has given way to my current status... I am out there for no other reason then it is great to be in the bush, to be with good mates and to hunt. I now apply all my years of accumalated skills to shoot some decent game (not needing a trophy, but I try for the biggest in the camp as it sets a standard for me personally). I love rifles and everything ass with it, so a good size animal with a fair degree of difficulty in the shot, makes the beer just a bit smoother around the campfire.

Good thoughts, 8.  Especially "everything ass with it".  Association can have many meanings.  Yippee

Hunting satisfies something in me that nothing else touches.  I hunt because I've never known anything else.  My father hunted and his father before him.   I hunt with my son, my brother, and my nephews.  I wish I could have one more hunt with my Dad.  If you still have yours, go hunting with him today.

I "hunt" to get away from the huslte and bustle. The beer driinkin', lie tellin', BS'in, card playin', cookin', eatin', catchin' up with old friends. The most fun part of huntin' is the trip there and back.
And I like some quiet time in the woods. It gives me time to really reflect on where I been, where I am, and where I'm goin'.
Love to hear the hounds packed up and runnin' a good race. Love it when someone kills there first deer. Love it when someone misses. Love it when a plan comes together.
