Looking for reviews and opinions on a Zeiss HD5 2-10x versus a Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x to be used on a hunting rifle. I just noticed the price on the Zeiss with the Rapid Z 600 is "only" $599, which surprised me a bit. Now all of a sudden I'm giving it serious consideration.

I'm mainly Looking for comparisons on brightness, clarity, contrast, color duplication, and low light performance.

I have a Conquest 3-9 with the Rapid Z, so I'm familiar with the reticle. It's a little thin, but it's been fine, so I'm not concerned about that. Just looking for a comparison glass.

I suspect the Zeiss is better, but wondering if the Vortex is close.

Thanks for your time and input.

I don't own a Viper, but I've looked through quite a few of them. It's a nice scope, but I don't believe it stacks up against the Zeiss. I vote HD5.

I have the 3-15x50 HD5, and to my eye, the conquest is just a hair more clear. That being said, that is the only area where I favor the conquest. Low light on the HD5 is just plain wow, and it also has a water repellent coating (lotutec I think it's called). Also, the Rapid Z 600 reticle has changed a little for the better on the newer Zeiss scopes. The hash marks on the side have been replaced with solid bars so that it can be seen better in low light.

Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please. -- Mark Twain

Thanks for the response. That is good info, and good news about the redesign on the reticle. I have yet to look through one.

There is one other option to add to the mix, and that's the Trijicon Accupower 3-9. I can't find reviews on it anywhere.

Same questions apply to that scope, and how it stacks up. If anybody has any options and/or info it would be greatly appreciated.
